Why healthy feet create healthier, more beautiful tango
Every tango dancer dreams of moving with balance, elegance, and freedom. We spend countless hours practicing musicality, embrace, pivots, adornos, and connection—but often forget about the most important part of the entire system: our feet.
Your feet are your first connection with the floor. Every step, every pivot, every transfer of weight begins there. They support your entire body every single day—not only while dancing, but also while walking, standing, working, and living.
When our feet feel healthy, our dancing feels lighter. Our balance improves. Our movements become quieter, more precise, and more expressive.
When our feet hurt, everything above them compensates. The ankles become stiff, the knees lose freedom, the hips tighten, and eventually the entire body begins working harder than necessary.
That is why taking care of your feet isn't a luxury.
It is part of becoming a better tango dancer.
Your Feet: An Incredible Engineering Masterpiece
Each foot contains:
26 bones
33 joints
Over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments
Together they create one of the most sophisticated support systems in the human body.
Every day they absorb thousands of steps while carrying your entire body weight.
Now imagine dancing at a milonga for four, five, or even six hours.
Your feet are continuously:
balancing
redirecting weight
absorbing impact
stabilizing the ankle
communicating with the floor
sending information to your brain
Healthy feet are not simply stronger feet.
They are smarter feet.
The EK Tango Flow Philosophy
One of the foundations of the EK Tango Flow system is that movement begins from awareness.
Before we ask our body to dance beautifully, we should first prepare it.
Just as musicians tune their instruments before a concert, dancers should prepare their feet before asking them to support an entire day—or an entire night—of movement.
This is why every morning begins with my feet.
My Morning Ritual Before Getting Out of Bed

Before my feet even touch the floor, I spend a few minutes waking them up.
This simple ritual has become one of the most important habits in my life.
I follow an approach inspired by traditional Chinese body awareness, where different parts of the foot symbolize different natural elements.
Rather than massaging randomly, I follow a specific path.
1. Wake up the Earth — Massage the Heel
I begin by gently massaging the heel.
The heel represents grounding.
It is the part of the foot that gives stability and support.
I simply warm it with my hands, bringing awareness and circulation into this powerful foundation.

2. Bring Water into the Earth
Next I massage the middle arch of the foot.
Using my fingers, I brush from the top of the arch down toward the heel.
Always downward.
Imagine brushing water toward the earth.
The arch represents flowing water.
The heel represents the earth.
This gentle movement creates a beautiful feeling of grounding and relaxation before even standing up.

3. Wake up the Sky
Now I move to the ball of the foot.
Here I gently tap or brush side to side.
Light.
Soft.
Almost like touching the wind or clouds.
The ball of the foot represents openness, movement, and connection with the space above us.

4. Wake up Every Toe
Finally I gently pull every toe individually.
One by one.
Imagine little stars stretching across the sky.
This simple exercise increases mobility, stimulates circulation, and reminds every tiny joint that it has work to do later during the day.
Only after this ritual do my feet touch the floor.

My Five Daily Strength Exercises
Once I'm standing, I continue preparing my feet.
These exercises take only a few minutes, but they completely change how my body feels for the rest of the day.
Exercise 1 — Slow Relevés
The first exercise is gradual relevés.
Not fast.
Not explosive.
Slow.
Half Relevé
Rise only about 4 cm from the floor.
Move slowly upward.
Move slowly downward.
Repeat:
20 repetitions
3 sets

Full Relevé
Now rise as high as possible onto the balls of your feet.
Again:
slowly up
slowly down
20 repetitions
3 sets
This strengthens the calves, ankles, intrinsic foot muscles, and improves balance enormously.

Exercise 2 — Rolling Energy Side to Side
Stand comfortably.
Slowly transfer pressure from the inside of the foot toward the outside and back again.
Don't rush.
Feel how the pressure travels through your feet.
This exercise improves mobility, awareness, and helps release stiffness from the ankles.

Exercise 3 — Free Foot Ankle Circles
Place all your weight on one standing leg.
Keep the standing leg stable.
Now let the free foot draw circles from the ankle.
8 circles outward
8 circles inward
Switch legs.
Repeat three rounds.
This exercise develops ankle mobility and keeps the joints healthy.
Healthy ankles create cleaner pivots.

Exercise 4 — Demi-Plié
Stand with your feet together.
Heels touching.
Ankles together.
Knees together.
Inner thighs connected.
Send your body slightly forward into the same diagonal that we use throughout the EK Tango Flow method.
Slowly bend your knees halfway.
Keep the heels on the floor.
Never force the movement.
Then slowly return to standing.
Repeat:
20 repetitions
2 sets
This exercise strengthens the legs while teaching proper body organization and weight placement.

Exercise 5 — Plié with Heel Lift
This is one of my favorite exercises because it combines strength, balance, and coordination.
Starting with your feet together:
bend into a demi-plié
slowly lift your heels
lower the heels
straighten the knees
Repeat slowly.
Every movement should feel smooth and controlled.
This exercise beautifully prepares the feet for tango because it teaches the body to organize itself from the ground upward.

Beautiful Feet Need Recovery Too
Training is only one side of the equation.
Recovery is equally important.
Our feet deserve the same care that athletes give to their muscles.
Whenever possible, I recommend:
professional foot massage
mobility work
stretching
releasing tension in the plantar fascia
taking care of the ankles and toes
If visiting a specialist isn't possible, you can absolutely care for your feet at home.
I created a complete Feet Stretching program that you can practice anytime, anywhere.
Whether you're at home, traveling, or preparing for a milonga, you can spend just a few minutes improving mobility, circulation, and flexibility.

Finding Tools That Help
Recently I discovered a foot-care product that has become part of my daily routine, and it has made my feet feel noticeably happier after long teaching days and nights at the milonga.
I'll share exactly what I'm using below.
If this particular product isn't available where you live, don't worry—many similar products can offer comparable benefits. The most important thing is developing the habit of taking care of your feet consistently.
(Milonga Recovery Formula.) Made in India by ''Fenara''

One of my favorite recovery rituals happens once a week.
After a week of teaching, practicing, traveling, and dancing, I give my feet the time they deserve. I fill a small tub with warm water, add Milonga Recovery Formula, and simply let my feet soak for about 20 minutes.
It has become much more than just a foot bath.
It's a moment to slow down.
To breathe.
To recover.
After soaking, my feet feel noticeably softer, more relaxed, and refreshed. The tension from long hours of dancing begins to melt away, and I can truly feel the difference. My feet feel lighter, healthier, and ready for another week of movement.
One of the things I love most is the feeling afterward. It's difficult to describe, but it feels as if all the accumulated stress has been washed away. My feet feel clean—not just physically, but energetically as well.
Currently Using as well
Dr Teal's Epsom Salt Bath Soaking Solution, Eucalyptus and Lavender

And absolutley favorite brand for my feet is :
Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula Foot Magic Tube

for every day use.
I genuinely appreciate companies that create products designed to support healthy feet, and I'm happy to share the tools that have been useful in my own daily routine.

I use this unique dance technique created by Eleonora, which focuses on warming up the feet and proper weight allocation. After years of pain, my feet finally stopped hurting. I had completely given up high heels back then, but thanks to Eleonora's technique, I am slowly returning to them.
